The Bleeding Melancholy: A View—Dr. Kunal Roy

As cited, Muharram is the first month of the Islamic lunar calendar which represents a deep, historical and emotive approach of the Muslims globally. A day of bleeding melancholy, remembrance and the ultimate restoration of trust.

The expression signifies something which is forbidden or auspicious. The prophet emphasized on the forsaking of warfare and encouraging in dedication and commitment.

Muharram represents nothing but a perennial sadness whose focal point lies in the gory battle of Karbala in 680CE. Husayn, the grandson of Prophet sacrificed himself and stood as a timeless edifice of justice, love, empathy and morality.

Life is celebrated. But this celebrates death amid black drapery and innumerable strikes on the bare body with something sharp to bleed, scream, suffer and lament! This particular ritual is also known as " self - flagellation ", an integral part of the plight! Moreover, it is the high time to make a quest of the 'divine closeness' and practice 'self - control'.

The very essence of Muharram transcends all the maverick barriers of history, society and religion. The " sacrifice" is an eternal tiding to uphold the dignity of truth and raise voice against every single wrong, injustice and sin.

The present world is torn apart by the pangs of unrest and immorality. It is not only a celebration of sorrow but also a strong summon to stand against the chaos which is gradually engulfing the cosmic delight! There ought not to be any discrimination but harmony and unity.

With the fleeting away of every single moment, the occasion has become more and more significant in this amoral social milieu. Let us commit to the values and ethics of life to elevate the human cause in the accepted sense of term!!
